On 28 February Xylella-files seminar on resistance in grapes

Feb 26, 2023 | Events

On 28 February 2023, in the context of the “Xylella Files” spring seminars, Summaira Riaz of the Agricultural Research Service at the USDA, will discuss her research on the genetic basis of grape plant resistance against diseases caused by Xylella fastidiosa and other pathogens.

Riaz will talk about the genetics of resistance to the Pierce’s disease (PD), caused by Xylella fastidiosa, and the fungal disease Powdery mildew (PM), both affecting grapevines. Strong resistance to X. fastidiosa has been identified in wild grapes and major resistance locus PdR1 was identified on chromosome 14 in a wild accession, b43-17 collected from Mexico. Summaira Riaz will discuss the current understanding of the PD and PM resistance in grapevine and the potential role of climate in shaping PD resistance in wild species.
