Xylella seminars: behind the scenes of the Xf comic strip

Mar 2, 2024 | News

Next Tuesday (5 March), Miguel Ángel Miranda (University of Balearic Islands), Ewelina Czwienczek (EFSA) and illustrator Miriam Rivera will present “Communicating plant health to the general public: the making of the Xylella comic”. The presentation is part of the Xylella seminars series, organised by BeXyl, EFSA and Auburn University.

In May 2023, EFSA launched the publication of a comic strip to raise awareness of the phytosanitary risks posed by Xylella fastidiosa. Drawn by illustrator Miriam Rivera, “Fastidious X, the fearsome killer” is the result of the coordinated efforts of EFSA’s plant health and communication specialists, together with Miguel Ángel Miranda, an expert in vector entomology from the University of the Balearic Islands.

All the episodes are available in English and German, and in French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Slovenian, Croatian and Greek, i.e. the languages of the EU countries most at risk from this bacterium according to EFSA’s 2019 pest risk assessment. The four-page comic strip can be downloaded from the EFSA website.

After 5 March, the seminar will also be available on the YoTube channel Soluciones a  Xylella fastidiosa thanks to the collaboration of the interdisciplinary thematic platform PTI Sol-Xyl.
